When the US Airforce decommissioned 14 Titan ICBMs, it contracted Lockheed Martin to refurbish them to launch satellites into orbit –this was the last of them. The DMSP F16 weather satellite has eight instruments to track clouds, storm systems and hurricanes around the world for weather forecasting.
Oct 18, 2003 A Soyuz rocket lifted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Saturday, carrying three astronauts bound for the International Space Station. On board are the crew of Expedition 8: Michael Foale and Alexander Kaleri, as well as European Space Agency Astronaut Pedro Duque, who will only stay on the station for 10 days.
