Persied Meteor Shower Peaks August 12th. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | August 1, 2001 Bad Weather Keeps Genesis on the Ground Movie of asteroid Landing Released Persied Meteor Shower Peaks August 12th BAD WEATHER KEEPS Genesis ON THE GROUND Thick, high clouds over the Cape Canaveral launch site kept the Genesis spacecraft and its Boeing Delta II rocket firmly on the ground. The spacecraft was originally supposed to launch on Monday, but it was delayed because of suspected problems with a power supply. Once it does get into space, Genesis will travel to the L1 Lagrange point and collect material from the solar wind, and then return it to Earth in 2004. NASA is tentatively planning another launch attempt for Thursday, but poor weather is expected to persist until the end of the week. Experts predict that the light of the full moon is going to drown out the shower a little bit, but keep your eyes peeled from midnight to dawn on August 12th, and the sky should still put on quite a show.
