PROTON LAUNCHES COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES
A Russian-built Proton K rocket successfully launched the PAS-10 communications satellite for PanAmSat Corp earlier this morning. Liftoff from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan occurred at 0111 GMT (9:41pm EDT), and separation occurred over 6 hours later as the satellite was placed into a geosynchronous transfer orbit. Once it reaches its final position, the satellite will provide communications services to Asia.
CHANDRA EXAMINES black holes IN A NEARBY GALAXY
New photographs taken by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory show areas of the Circinus Galaxy that contain black holes: a supermassive black hole at the heart of the galaxy, and potentially many smaller holes dotted around the galaxy's spiral arms. Chandra was used to search for an X-Ray objects that changed in intensity over a regular time period, and matched a similar pattern found with black holes in our own galaxy.
EARTH OBSERVING satellite TRACKS MOVEMENT OF DUST CLOUDS
Using instruments on board the Terra spacecraft, researchers from NASA have been keeping an eye on the movement of dust across our planet. They found that dust clouds generated in China can actually cross the Pacific Ocean to North America in such quantities they can play a significant role in air quality and health.
