COMING HOME

The 'miracle' of spaceflight involves hundreds of different procedures, as carefully choreographed and rehearsed as the most intricate ballet. Landing the Space Shuttle is no exception. With the Shuttle Endeavour returning to Earth after its recent assembly flight to the International Space Station, Jennifer Laing looks at the post-landing safety requirements, and talks to Bill Williams, who spent 10 years in charge of NASA's Shuttle post-landing process, known as 'recovery'.

TITO DOESN'T THINK HE'S GETTING IN THE WAY

Nearing the end of his trip into space, tourist Dennis Tito is adamant that he hasn't gotten in the way of any International Space Station operations. In a recent press conference, a floating Tito talked about how he's been occupying his time in space by taking photographs and staring out the window - but also refuted NASA's claims that he's been hindering the crew's work; in fact, he says, he's been pitching in on some of their more menial tasks. Tito arrived at the station on Monday, and will come back to Earth in a Soyuz capsule this weekend.

JAMES CAMERON MIGHT BE THE NEXT PRIVATE CITIZEN TO VISIT SPACE

James Cameron might get his chance to film a movie on board the International Space Station. The film director and space enthusiast has been in talks with NASA and the Russian Space Agency, and if everything goes well, he'll launch on board a Russian rocket in 2003 to spend time on the station. Unlike Dennis Tito, Cameron has been praised by NASA for his patience and willingness to wait for safety guidelines to be developed. In order to capture the experience appropriately, Cameron is working with Sony film engineers to develop a completely new, state-of-the-art camera that he will take into space.

CANADIAN ROCKET TEAM ANGLES FOR X-PRIZE

A Canadian entry to the X-Prize unveiled its full-scale engineering prototype rocket at the Toronto Aviation & Aircraft Show this week. The 7.3 metre rocket's engines and guidance system have already been flight tested, with drop tests scheduled for this summer. When it's ready to fly, the rocket will be carried to an altitude of 12,000 metres by a balloon and then launch and carry itself to an altitude of 120km before descending back to Earth.
