BOOK REVIEW: "FLIGHT: MY LIFE IN MISSION CONTROL", BY CHRIS KRAFT

An inside look at the American side of the space race, Chris Kraft's Flight

covers his years as NASA's Flight Director-from the earliest Mercury

missions, all the way through Gemini and Apollo-in careful and insightful

detail. The book is filled with anecdotes both of the lives of the men who

conceived, designed and flew the missions and with the massive technical

difficulties involved in building a program which would take men to the Moon

in ten short years. Flight is a detailed and involving look at NASA during

her glory days by a man who was in the thick of the action from the

beginning. - review by Piers Brown

ENDEAVOUR IS GO FOR APRIL 19 LAUNCH

Officials from NASA announced Friday that the Space Shuttle Endeavour has been cleared for launch on April 19th, as originally scheduled. Until today, there was some concern that the launch would have to be pushed back because of congestion on the launch pads. The primary objective of the 11-day mission will be to install the Canadian-built robot servicing system onto space station Alpha.

ODYSSEY LAUNCHES SUCCESSFULLY, ON ITS WAY TO MARS

NASA began its next mission to Mars on Saturday with the launch of the Mars Odyssey spacecraft on board a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida - it will reach Mars by October. Once it reaches its operational orbit around Mars in January 2002, the spacecraft will scan the surface of the Red planet searching for water, mapping surface materials, and measuring radiation levels.

NEW meteorites DISCOVERED FROM MARS AND THE MOON

North African meteor hunters have discovered two of the most rare kinds meteorites ever discovered: one from the Moon, and one from Mars. The Moon rock (15th ever discovered) weighs in at 1 kg was believed to have been discovered in Algeria, while the Mars rock (17th ever discovered) is only 28 grams and was found in Morocco. Once their origin is confirmed, the meteorites will be of great interest to scientists; especially the Martian one, as it may help shed some light on the possibility of past life on Mars.
