NASA and Military Agency Continue to Search for Missing Polar Lander

HOME ALONE? THE SEARCH CONTINUES

Dr. H. Paul Shuch, Executive Director of the SETI League, says the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence (SETI) is "a gamble, with long odds" but argues that it is a worthwhile pursuit which increases the chances of making a "serendipitous discovery". Jennifer Laing talks to a man with his ear to the ground - and to the skies.

NASA AND MILITARY AGENCY CONTINUE TO SEARCH FOR MISSING POLAR LANDER

Representatives from NASA and officials from the US National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) continue to pore over photos they believe may contain pictures of the Mars Polar Lander, which went missing December 3, 1999. NIMA has been using advanced techniques to examine the photographs, but NASA remains unconvinced that blurry suspects are actually images of the Polar Lander and its aeroshell resting on the surface of Mars.
