STS-102 ENDS WITH DISCOVERY LANDING IN FLORIDA
After NASA waved off the first landing attempt, the Space Shuttle Discovery made a successful landing this morning at 0731 GMT (2:31am EST) at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Although the weather wasn't ideal, it was within the acceptable margins for clouds, rain and wind. This ends mission STS-102, which spent a total of 13 days in space; delivered the Italian-built Leonardo module to space station Alpha; and exchanged space station crews.

MIR GETS READY WITH FINAL MANEUVER
Now at an altitude of only 220km, the Mir spacestation has an important maneuver to make before Russian mission control brings it down on Friday. Currently tumbling slowly in orbit, they need to stabilize the station on Thursday so that it stops rolling. This is necessary so that the descent thrusters will be at the right angle when they fire to drop the station out of orbit. This maneuver carries some risk; however, because if it fails, the station will continue to tumble, and controllers will have no way to decide where it will crash.

MARS POLAR LANDER DISCOVERED?
The National Imagery and Mapping Agency of the US government believes it may have discovered the Mars Polar Lander on the surface of Mars. They did this using advanced military methods to analyze photographs of the landing site taken by the Mars Global Surveyor. In fact, according to the agency, they can actually resolve the lander resting on the rocky soil. Experts at NASA are unconvinced at this point - they have seen the images and are quite skeptical that the lander has been discovered.
