Weather May Delay Discovery Landing

The Complexities of Bringing Down Mir

NASA Refusing to Let Space Tourist on Alpha

WEATHER MAY DELAY DISCOVERY LANDING

The playing of the wake-up song 'Just What They Needed' for the STS-102 crew this morning was rather apt. It appears that adverse weather in Florida may further delay the scheduled landing of the Space Shuttle Discovery, possibly causing the Expedition One crew to spend another day in space, after more than 140 days aboard the International Space Station Alpha. Despite this news, Jennifer Laing reports that they seemed to be in good spirits during an on-orbit interview.

THE COMPLEXITIES OF BRINGING DOWN MIR

Although the Russian Space Agency believes they'll be bringing the Mir spacestation down on Friday morning, the day isn't carved in stone. It all depends of the Sun, and the effect it has on the Earth's atmosphere, causing it to shrink or inflate. Changes in the atmosphere will affect the trajectory and thus the final impact location of Mir when it hits. This is also complicating the task of a group of tourists who have paid $6,500 US to fly out along the trajectory of the falling station to watch it crash.

NASA REFUSING TO LET SPACE TOURIST ON ALPHA

American multimillionaire Dennis Tito might have run into another hurdle on his way to becoming the first space tourist. It appears that NASA has ruled out his inclusion onto a three-seat taxi flight on board a Russian Soyuz bound for space station Alpha on April 30th - they will not permit him to train in Houston with the rest of the crew. NASA's reason for the rejection is that Tito would require constant supervision, and hasn't received the training to help out in the event of an emergency. The Russian cosmonauts that were supposed to train with Tito have reportedly refused to train in Houston until Tito is reinstated.
