SHUTTLE LAUNCHES WITH NEW ISS CREW

The Space Shuttle Discovery launched into orbit early this morning with passengers and payload bound for the International Space Station. A layer of frost coated the large external fuel tank, but the chilly morning temperatures did not drop low enough to form mission-delaying layers of ice on the tank. The three passengers will be the first full-time crew on the station.

X-33 AND X-38 CUTS BOLSTER RUSSIA'S ISS ROLE

Proposed budget cuts to U.S. involvement in Space Station Alpha may inadvertently increase U.S. dependance on Russia in the International Space Station (ISS) project. The X-33 was designed as a prototype next generation "ferry" for the ISS, while the X-38 crew return vehicle was to perform as an emergency lifeboat. With the cancellation of both projects, those roles will likely be filled by the Russian spacecraft currently relegated to those tasks.
