ASTEROID DESTROYED MUCH OF LIFE 251 MILLION YEARS AGO

The greatest mass extinction in the history of the Earth was caused by an asteroid strike 251 million years ago. Although scientists don't know the site of the impact, they have found traces of a complex carbon molecule in a set layer of rock in several spots around the world. These molecules, which are a telltale sign of an asteroid strike occur at the same point in the rock layer as evidence of the mass extinction - an layer in the rock devoid of fossils. It's believed the asteroid was between 6 to 12km across, roughly the same size as the spacerock that killed the Dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

US COMPANY OFFERS TRIPS TO WATCH MIR CRASH

An American company is selling tickets on a trip to watch the Mir space station reenter the atmosphere in late March. For only $6,500 a seat, tourists will be flown on a chartered jet to within 200 kilometres of the projected flight path of the station as it reenters. To minimize the risk of the station hitting the plane, they will fly parallel to the ground track of the station, hoping that it doesn't tumble wildly off in their direction.
