COUNTDOWN FOR ATLANTIS BEGINS
NASA has officially begun the countdown for the Space Shuttle Atlantis - it's currently scheduled to launch Wednesday at 2311 GMT (3:11pm PST). The shuttle and its cargo of the US Destiny laboratory module should have been in space a month ago, but suspected problems with cables that connect the shuttle to its booster rockets kept Atlantis grounded for tests.

TITO ENTERS FINAL STAGE OF COSMONAUT TRAINING
US businessman Dennis Tito has begun the final training at Russia's star City for his upcoming mission to space station Alpha. Tito, a former NASA engineer and self-made multimillionaire, is expected to launch April 30th on board a Soyuz rocket. He'll then spend 10-days in orbit assisting the 2-cosmonaut crew on various maintenance and scientific activities. It's rumoured that NASA and the European Space Agency may still try to block Tito's flight.
GARNEAU POSTED TO IMPORTANT POSITION IN THE CANADIAN SPACE AGENCY
Canadian Astronaut Marc Garneau, a veteran of 3 Space Shuttle missions, will become executive vice-president of the Canadian Space Agency. Dr. Garneau will assist CSA president Mac Evans in the implementation of the Canadian Space Program.
NEW MAP OF Pluto RELEASED
Astronomers from the Southwest Research Institute have produced a new map of the surface of Pluto that shows a mysterious dark streak just above the equator. The map was produced by watching the shadow of Pluto's Moon Charon as it passed across the surface of the planet. Each time Charon passed in front, the Astronomers were able to measure the variations in light on the planet's surface. We won't know if the map is accurate until Pluto is visited by spacecraft - this isn't expected to happen any earlier than 2015.
