NEW OPTICAL SETI telescope UNDER CONSTRUCTION
A telescope designed to search for laser signals from extraterrestrial civilizations is now under construction in Harvard, Massachusetts, and should be ready in a year. The 1.8 metre Optical SETI telescope will examine candidate stars, searching for a brief laser pulse that could be several hundred times brighter than the actual star. While other OSETI programs exist, this will be the first telescope to be used exclusively for this purpose.
NO PROBLEMS FOUND WITH THE SHUTTLE'S WIRING
Engineers worked on the Space Shuttle Atlantis over the weekend to see there were any problems with the shuttle's wiring - they didn't find any problems. Assuming there are no other delays, Atlantis will be rolled out to the launch pad on Thursday, and prepared for launch as early as February 6th. Once it does get into orbit, the shuttle will dock with the space station Alpha, and the astronauts will install the new $1.38 billion Destiny laboratory module.

NEW CASSINI IMAGES RELEASED
A new photo taken by the Cassini spacecraft as it passed Jupiter shows the Moon Io above the clouds. The photo was taken on January 1, 2001, two days after the spacecraft's closest approach. It looks like the Moon is right above the clouds, but the image is deceiving - Io is actually 350,000 kilometres away from the surface(two Jupiter diameters).
