RUSSIAN PRIME MINISTER SIGNS MIR'S DEATH WARRANT

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov has signed a resolution ordering space station Mir be deorbited early this year. The resolution also calls for a commission to decided exactly how, when, and where the space station will be crashed, but most likely, it will be dropped into the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Australia. Russia is planning to concentrate its limited space-related funds on helping construct the International Space Station.

ARIANESPACE AND SEA LAUNCH BATTLE FOR FIRST LAUNCH OF 2001

Arianespace will get the honour of the first rocket launch of the new millenium if everything goes as planned today with the launch of an Ariane 4 rocket carrying its TÜrksat 2A/Eurasiasat 1 cargo. If the launch is delayed more than 27 minutes, however, a Sea Launch Zenit 3SL rocket will launch with its cargo of the first XM satellite Radio transmitter. The Ariane 4 launch window opens up Monday evening at 10:08pm GMT.
