NEW IBM COMPUTER HELPS DETECT SPACEJUNK
The US Air Force has enlisted the assistance of a new supercomputer built by IBM to help detect objects in space, from satellites of pieces of spacejunk. The IBM SP supercomputer is 40 times faster than Deep Blue, the computer that beat chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, and uses algorithms to digitally enhance photos taken by Air Force Telescopes to help identify orbit trajectories and even assess damage to orbiting spacecraft.
FROSTY CRATERS ON MARS
New images taken by the Mars Global Surveyor show frost rimmed craters in both the northern and southern polar areas, which demonstrate how the seasons change on the Red Planet. It's spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and frost in the craters is retreating, while it's autumn in the South, and the frost line is slowly moving Northward.
NEARBY brown dwarf DISCOVERED
An international team of Astronomers have discovered a brown dwarf star only 13 light years away from our solar system. The object is 60 times the size of Jupiter, and was discovered using the giant 10-metre Keck 1 telescope on Hawaii's Mauna Kea using a technique called a lithium test - the lack of lithium, but the presence of cesium indicated the object was probably a brown dwarf.
