November 10, 2000

I've set up with Amazon.com to hear about all the latest books which are related to space and astronomy. They send me an update every month or so, so I thought I'd pass it along. Of course, if you end up buying any of these books, I'll get a handy commission - maybe even enough for a cup of coffee! I've seen one person who seems to be buying all their merchandise on Amazon.com and giving the commissions to universe Today. Now that is a good idea! If you want to do the same, just set your bookmark to Amazon.com to the following, then whenever you want to buy something, go there. My local Starbucks thanks you.

Here are the books:

SNOW ON IO

Scientists at the University of Arizona believe they've found what looks like sulphur-based snow on Jupiter's Moon Io. High resolution photographs taken by the Galileo spaceprobe show how volcanoes on the Moon disperse sulphur dioxide gas across its surface. The sulphur solidifies into a substance that looks a lot like water-based snow. Unlike snow, however, it doesn't gravitate to the poles, but seems to cover the entire moon.

HUBBLE SPOTS A NEARBY Neutron STAR

Recent photographs taken by the Hubble Space Telescope show a nearby neutron star hurtling past our solar system. neutron star RX J185635-3754 is only 200 light years away from our solar system and getting closer (although, it will never get closer than 170 light years). From our vantage point, the object seems to move across the sky at a distance of the moon's diameter every 5,400 years, making it one of the fastest stars in the sky.

BIG SOLAR STORM HITS THE EARTH

Solar observing satellites detected one of the largest solar storms in recent years (S-4 on the NOAA's space weather scale which tops out at S-5), which caused a hail of particles to strike the Earth Wednesday night. A few satellites suffered some damage, and the crew of the International Space Station set up a radiation detector to watch the progress of the storm to see if they were at any risk.
