Sun Sends Space Rocks Crashing into the Earth
SPACED OUT! CELEBRATING WORLD SPACE WEEK, OCTOBER 4-10
Did you know that October 4-10 has been designated as World Space Week from the year 2000 onwards? Do you also know what is auspicious about these dates? Jennifer Laing looks at this week of international events and activities, which celebrates the beginning of the 'Space Millennium'. A universe Today exclusive story.
HUBBLE PEERS INTO A STELLAR NURSERY
New images from the Hubble Space Telescope reveal incredible detail of object N 81 - a newborn star cluster found within the Small Magellanic Cloud. Known to Astronomers as "The Blob", few features of the object have been visible using ground-based telescopes, but these new images from Hubble show very young stars cradled within a nebula of hot, glowing gas.
SUN SENDS SPACE ROCKS CRASHING INTO THE EARTH
Scientists working at the Charles University in Prague and the University of Trieste have a theory for why the Earth is struck by a constant hail of space rocks. It seems that the Sun exhibits an uneven force on asteroid debris as they fly through space. This force steers the debris into orbits which are affected by the gravity of Jupiter and Saturn, and then flung into the inner solar system. Most disappears into the sun, but an estimated 0.5% reaches the Earth. The results of their study will be published in an upcoming edition of Nature.
