30TH ANNIVERSARY OF LUNA 16
It's a common misconception that the Apollo astronauts were the only people to bring samples back from the moon, but the Russians sent a robot probe, Luna 16, to do the same job in 1970. Space historian, Larry Klaes, looks back at this incredible mission. A challenge for engineers today, it was a monumental achievement 30 years ago.
A Man on the Moon - Andrew Chaikin
This book was the basis for HBO's miniseries "From the Earth to the Moon", but if you haven't read the book yet, you're really missing out. Chaikin interviewed every single living Apollo Astronaut and put together a painstakingly detailed account of the Apollo program - detailed, but not dry. You really get a handle on who the people were; both the astronauts and the support staff. I pretty much read the book in a couple of sittings.

SCIENTISTS URGE asteroid DEFENSE
The Task Force on Near Earth Objects delivered its report to the UK government, urging them to undertake the construction of a three-metre survey observatory capable of detecting potentially dangerous asteroids. Their report lists the fact that nine objects came within two lunar distances of the Earth since 1991, any of which could have caused a global catastrophe had they struck the planet.
ATLANTIS DISCONNECTS FROM THE STATION
The crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis disconnected their spacecraft from the International Space Station yesterday, after spending a total of five days on board. During their brief stay, the 7-man crew installed equipment, and packed away supplies for for future permanent inhabitants. Atlantis is scheduled to land Wednesday at 7:56am GMT at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

BUY ACREAGE... ON THE MOON
For around $20, you can own a single acre of land on the moon. In fact, soon you'll be able to buy acreage on all the planets in the solar system from a company called Moon Estates. In exchange for your $20, you'll get an official title and deed, a map showing you where your land is located, as well as documentation explaining why Moon Estates thinks it can sell you the land. A UN charter says the space can't be owned by countries, but companies like Moon Estates believe they've found a loophole, permitting individual ownership.
