Hubble Plays with the Spirograph Nebula. |
![]() | September 7, 2000 Bad Weather Threatens Shuttle Launch Ariane Launches Eutelsat Satellite Hubble Plays with the Spirograph Nebula BAD WEATHER THREATENS SHUTTLE LAUNCH Lightning has struck the Space Shuttle Atlantis twice already this week, and it looks like that's just the beginning of some weather that could very well delay Friday's launch. Forecasters are predicting a 40% chance of rain or clouds that could interfere with the 12:45pm GMT launch. The launch window is extremely short, only two and a half minutes, so they don't have time to wait for clouds to move past the launch platform. The lightning strikes didn't cause any damage to the shuttle. This planetary nebula lies 2,000 light years away from the Earth in the constellation of Lepus, and was obtained using Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. It's likely that our own Sun will form a nebula like this in a mere 5 billion years.
