Butterfly Nebula in the Making
MAKING MARTIAN BRICKS
Scientists are developing special bricks to protect Martian colonists from dangerous radiation. By mixing polyethylene and Martian topsoil, the bricks can be mostly made from local resources, and will help to reduce the amount of weight that needs to be transported from Earth. Visitors to Mars would be pelted by a constant hail of cosmic rays, as well as radiation from any nuclear reactor they brought along, so lightweight, easy to make radiation shielding is a high priority.
CHINESE ROCKET LAUNCHES OBSERVATION SATELLITE
A Chinese-built Long March 4-B rocket launched a ZY-2 multipurpose observation satellite into orbit Friday. The launch occurred at 3:25am GMT from the Taiyuan satellite Launch Center in central China. The satellite will gather images of China, which will be used for planning, surveying, crop yield assessment, and disaster monitoring.
BUTTERFLY NEBULA IN THE MAKING
New observations made with the Hubble Space Telescope show rich detail of planetary nebula CRL 618. The nebula is a great example of sun-like star going through the transition of shedding off most of its mass, and becoming a beautiful, butterfly-shaped nebula. The observations add valuable clues to theories about the origin and development of planetary nebulae.
