A brief note...

First, the results of the survey are in. Over the course of the last five days, I received a total of 1460 survey responses. Out of 5,500 readers, that's pretty incredible! I've gathered the numbers together and posted them onto a special page.

Second, the producers of Survivor are shopping around the next reality-based TV show, where potential astronauts train in Russia as the weeks go on, the cosmonauts will remove contestants until one final trainee gets to go on an ACTUAL mission on board Mir. This show could bring a tremendous amount of interest to space exploration, so if it looks like they have trouble selling it, get ready to support it with letters, faxes and emails. Finally, I'll be attending the Mars Society convention in Toronto, and won't be returning until next Tuesday. I'll be taking the laptop, so hopefully I'll still be able to provide updates while I'm on the road; however, the technology may fail, so be prepared for spotty service over the next week. I may even provide updates about the convention as it happens.

Cluster Launch Successful

Progress Links Up with Space Station

CLUSTER LAUNCH SUCCESSFUL

A Soyuz rocket successfully launched the second pair of Cluster II satellites yesterday. The launch occurred right on schedule at 11:13am GMT from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The spacecraft will spend the next two days performing a series of maneuvers to bring them into formation with the previously launched pair of satellites. This successful launch is a huge relief for the European Space Agency; these satellites are replacements for a group destroyed in an Ariane 5 mishap four years ago.

PROGRESS LINKS UP WITH SPACE STATION

An automated Russian Progress supply ship linked up with the International Space Station last night at 8:13 GMT. The unmanned ship carried a cargo of fuel, food, clothing and equipment for future permanent resident astronauts due to arrive this fall. NASA broadcast the event live on television, showing black-and-white video of the link up.
