US REPORT IDENTIFIES 2001 FOR CHINESE MANNED LAUNCH

A US defense department report released last month indicates that China is likely to attempt their first manned launch sometime in 2001. This report, and other predictions, are based on the fact that China has already successfully performed a test launch of an unmanned "Shenzhou" space capsule. The capsule weighs less than 200 pounds, and is designed to carry up to 3 "taikonauts" into orbit.

NASA DENIES SHUTTLE ASTRONAUTS WERE AT RISK TO HACKER

NASA has produced a press release denying that astronauts on the Space Shuttle were in any kind or risk when a hacker penetrated their network during a 1997 mission. The only impact the hacker had on the STS-86 mission was to delay the transmission of routine medical information. The story was originally posted on the BBC website, and then picked up by most other news agencies.

CLUSTER MISSION DELAYED BY ZVEZDA LAUNCH

The next major mission from the European Space Agency, Cluster II, has been pushed back three days to make way for the Zvezda space station module. Both missions were originally given July 12th as a launch date from the Baikonur cosmodrome, but a dual launch was never likely - it was Cluster II that got bumped. Cluster II will deploy 4 identical satellites which will fly in close formation, and study the physics of Earth's near-space environment.
