HUBBLE CAPTURES GAMMA RAY BURSTS

A group of European Astronomers have used the Hubble Space Telescope to image a gamma ray burst occurring for the first time in a distant galaxy. The Astronomers speculate that these powerful explosions of electromagnetic radiation are caused by supernovas. The burst, named GRB 980425, occurred in a Galaxy 125 million light years away, and a supernova was seen in exactly the same location one day later.

BOEING WINS RADARSAT-2 LAUNCH CONTRACT

Boeing announced that it has won the contract to launch the Canadian Radarsat-2 satellite using a Delta 2 rocket in 2003. Radarsat-2 will be a ground imaging satellite which uses a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system to take images up to 3m resolution.

CHANDRA PROVIDES NEW DETAIL ABOUT SUPERNOVA

Astronomers using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory took new images of supernova remnant Cassiopeia A to produce the best map yet of heavy elements ejected in a supernova explosion. The colours in the photograph represent the intensity of the X-rays, with yellow the most intense, then red, purple, green.
