COSMONAUTS GET READY TO LEAVE MIR
After a nine-week mission on board the Mir space station, Cosmonauts Sergei Zalyotin and Alexander Kalery are getting ready to come home. The crew will board a Soyuz TM-30 capsule at 2122 GMT, and then deorbit back to Earth, arriving on the ground at 0043 GMT Friday morning. The station will be empty until the next crew arrives in the fall.
ATLAS 3 DEMONSTRATION PLANNED FOR AUGUST
After the first two launches of the Delta 3 rocket failed, Boeing needs to build confidence in its new launch vehicle. RADIO SHACK SPONSORS PRIVATE LUNAR MISSION
LunaCorp announced that Radio Shack has joined the effort to produce the first, private mission to land on the moon. For a currently undisclosed sum of money, LunaCorp will produce an interactive game for Radio Shack's website, and then work with the tech-store to produce an automated rover which will be tested in the Canadian Arctic next summer. The mission is scheduled to launch 2003.
ESA EXTENDS ULYSSES' LIFE
The European Space Agency announced yesterday that it has approved funding of the Ulysses mission until the end of 2004. This is an important extension of the solar-observing satellite, because it will allow it to make two complete orbits around the sun, and be able to watch a full 11-year solar cycle. Ulysses was launched in October 1990.
