Laser Weapon Successfully Shoots Down Missile
GIANT SOLAR STORM HEADED OUR WAY
Scientists using the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) detected a series of solar eruptions on Tuesday, including a full-halo coronal mass ejection. And it's headed our way. Although some communications may be disrupted, but the mass ejection poses little threat to us on Earth. Spectacular aurorae should be visible throughout the northern hemisphere until Saturday.
NEAR INSTRUMENT SHUT DOWN
One of the instruments on the Near Earth asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft was shut down after the mission team detected a power surge in the device. During normal operations, the Near-Infrared Spectrometer began drawing excessive current from the spacecraft and stopped sending data - engineers shut it down, and have begun looking for what could have caused the surge. The rest of the spacecraft is working properly.
LASER WEAPON SUCCESSFULLY SHOOTS DOWN MISSILE
A new laser weapon tested in the White Sands Missile Range has successfully shot down a short-range missile for the first time, validating the technology as a means of protection from attack. The new weapon is being developed to protect Israel from short-range missile attacks from its neighbors. Future tests will attempt to shoot down multiple rockets.
