Imagine a band dedicated to the promotion of space and space exploration. Now imagine that the three women that comprise this band only play electronic instruments made out of homemade and found parts! Does it sound too good to be true? We thought so too! That band is Zia and they're the focus of a special Cosmic Visions!

NEW spacecraft VIEWS EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE

NASA's newly launched Imager for Magnetopause to aurora Global Exploration (Image) spacecraft took its first images of the Earth's extended helieum atmosphere - a shell of gas that extends into space and interacts with the solar wind. Image uses the longest antenna ever deployed in space; longer than the length of the Empire State Building.

HUBBLE TAKES DETAILED PHOTOS OF THE CRAB NEBULA

Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope captured the most detailed photos ever taken of the Crab Nebula - the remnants of star that went supernova in 1054 AD. Located 6,500 light years from Earth, the Crab Nebula contains gas and material streaming away from a central pulsar at 5 million kilometers per hour.

EROS IS RELATED TO AN EARLY EARTH

Data collected by the Near Earth asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft as it orbits Eros indicates that the asteroid is similar in composition to the building blocks of

the solar system - possibly even a look into what the Earth's composition at the beginning of its development. NEAR determined the chemical makeup of the spacerock by

blasting it with radiation, and measuring the X-Rays produced from the surface.

COMPTON BEGINS DE-ORBIT MANEUVERS

NASA fired the maneuvering rockets of the Compton Observatory to begin its final mission: a fiery descent through the Earth's atmosphere. The firing occurred late Tuesday evening, and dropped the spacecraft's altitude from 510 km down to 350 km. The rockets will fire again early Sunday before dropping the spacecraft into the Pacific Ocean somewhere between Hawaii and Mexico.
