Atlas 3 Debut is a Success. |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Shuttle's Work Nearly Complete Atlas 3 Debut is a Success scientists Hoping to Stop Compton's Destruction SHUTTLE'S WORK NEARLY COMPLETE The crew of the Space Shuttle Atlantis have completed most of the repairs to the International Space Station. If the mission wraps up as smoothly as it has gone so far, the crew will undock Atlantis from the station on Friday. There is one small problem with one of the newly installed batteries, however, which could cause the crew to stick around until Monday to make sure it's repaired. The rocket cleared the launch tower Wednesday at 7:10 EDT, and the upper stage positioned the Eutelsat W4 satellite in a preliminary parking orbit. But since one of its three gyroscopes failed, NASA has decided to de-orbit the observatory rather than allow another gyroscope to fail - if one does, NASA won't be able to control where the telescope crashes. scientists who rely on the observatory are trying to get NASA to take the risk anyway.
