Io Confirms Dusty Old Theory
EIGHT planets DISCOVERED
Swiss Astronomers have discovered eight new planets, bringing the number
of known planets outside our system to about 40. The objects, circling
stars similar to our Sun, range in mass from less than that of Saturn to
at least 15 times that of Jupiter. The discoveries were made at the European
Southern Observatory's La Silla complex in South America.
SOHO TRACKS CONVERGENCE INVISIBLE FROM EARTH
The SOHO satellite will track the progress of the planets as they line up
out of Earth's field of view on the other side of the sun. The Solar and
Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft has already begun imaging Saturn,
Jupiter and Mercury, which will align with Venus and Mars for their closet
convergence next week.
IO CONFIRMS DUSTY OLD THEORY
Volcanoes on the Jovian Moon Io have long been suspected of being the source
of the dust found in fast-moving streams extending away from Jupiter. A dust
detector on the Galileo spacecraft confirmed Io as the origin of the streams,
first discovered by the Ulysses spacecraft nearly a decade ago.
