Five satellite images of the super-secret test facility known as Area 51

were posted on the web Monday. A Russian satellitelegally legally photographed

the facility under the 1992 "open-skies" agreement (which permits

satellite surveillance to verify arms-control compliance). The photos reveal

little, since the Air Force is well aware of passing satellites and keep sensitive

test craft in hangers during flybys. Many users have been unable to access

the photos, due to overloading traffic and attacks by hackers, spawning

various conspiracy theories.

Scientists have developed a method of scanning the opposite side of the

sun in hopes of detecting dangerous storms that could affect Earth based

satellites and power systems that could be damaged by the radiation.

Combat Laser Test Scheduled

The Army will soon test a combat laser system by attempting to

destroy a small rocket. The laser is a joint project between the United

States and Israel. Israel hopes to use a laser based anti-rocket system

to defend its borders against the 122mm Katyusha rockets used by

guerrillas based in southern Lebanon. Success of the prototype could

revolutionize the way battles are fought.
