Hubble Set to Shatter Distance Record

CASSINI spacecraft CLEARS ASTEROIDS

The Cassini project marked a milestone in its trek to rendezvous with

Saturn in 2004, clearing the asteroid belt Wednesday. There was

actually little concern that the craft wouldn't make it: the asteroid belt

has lots of debris, but far more empty space.

EUROPAN LIFE MAY BE CLOSE TO SURFACE

Two groups of planetary scientists have warmed to the idea that life

on the icy Jovian Moon Europa may not be limited to a hypothesized

subsurface ocean, but could be also be surprisingly near the surface.

HUBBLE SET TO SHATTER DISTANCE RECORD

Hubble has picked up a mysterious object that could be far, far further

away than anything ever seen before. Interstellar distances are

measured by their "redshift": light from far-off objects is stretched

towards the red end of the spectrum. Currently, the record holders for

distance are a Galaxy with a Redshift of 6.7 and a quasar with a Redshift

of 5.8. The newly discovered object may have a Redshift of 12.
