Mission to Mir

Planetary Conjunction Means...Nothing

MISSION TO MIR

Two Russian cosmonauts will launch for Mir from Kazakhstan on Tuesday

in the first manned mission to Mir since August. No one knows what to

expect when they open the door of the aging space platform, which has

likely been leaking more air every day. The mission was primarily funded

by private money.

A FLEET OF satellites BETTER THAN ONE

Formation flying miniature satellites? The MIT SPHERES project is

developing three satellites the size of volleyballs which will test a variety

of technologies necessary for formation flying. The theory is to network

several small satellites together to do the work of one large, expensive one.

PLANETARY ALIGNMENT MEANS...NOTHING

A visually interesting planetary dance takes place in the western sky for

the next two weeks as Mars, Jupiter and Saturn align. The bright planets

will be visible at dusk to anyone with a clear view of the west. Alarmists

and survivalists have touted this as an apocalyptic sign, but planetary

alignments are not rare events: in December 1997 and January 1998,

most of the planets, plus the Moon and Sun, gathered in the same

general area of the sky.
