Mysterious Solar "Spin Cycle"

FLYING LIFEBOAT FLEW WELL, LANDED POORLY

Thursday was the longest and highest free flight test for the prototype

spacecraft that will eventually shuttle astronauts from the International

Space Station. The X-38 "flying lifeboat" flew for more than 40 seconds

from a height of 39,000 feet in a test that included pitches and rolls.

Although one landing skid did not deploy, a problem that fortunately

did not cause any major problems in the craft's landing in a dry lake bed.

NASA ADMINISTRATOR TAKES THE HEAT

Last years Mars program failures are the fault of NASA Administrator Dan

Goldin, at least according to him. He says that he pushed too hard and

cuts too aggressively, making success impossible for spacecraft managers.

He promises to make sure missions have adequate resources, but NASA

will not be returning to the days of big spacecraft with immense budgets.

MYSTERIOUS SOLAR "SPIN CYCLE"

Our Sun has two parallel layers of gas beneath the surface that are

speeding up and slowing down in a coordinated way: as one spins faster,

the other reduces speed. Solar scientists are baffled by the unexpected

phenomenon.
