ENGINE SHUTDOWN LIKELY CULPRIT IN MARS LANDER CRASH

Two review boards report that a software glitch likely caused the loss of

the Mars Polar Lander (MPL). When the landing legs of the MPL deployed

at 130 feet above Mars, sensors in the legs may have sent signals telling the

computer it was already landed, shutting down the engines. However, the

deeper problem was attempting ambitious missions with too little, leaving

little chance of success.

FISTS FLY IN RUSSIAN SPACE TEST

Cosmonauts have come to blows during isolation experiments. The tests

are investigating how well space travelers would cope with long, lonely

space travel. The conclusion is: not very well.

GALILEO HONORED WITH AEROSPACE AWARD

The team of NASA's Galileo will be honored with the Nelson P. Jackson

Aerospace Award for outstanding contributions to planetary exploration.

In sharp contrast to the failures of the Mars program, Galileo was launched

in 1989, arrived at Jupiter in 1995 for the two year mission for which it was

designed, performed another two year mission that ended Jan 31st of this

year, when it began another mission set called the Galileo Millennium Mission.
