AN ALL-NEW "DEEP SKY"

LIVE TODAY AT 8:00PM ET

Radio astronomy isn't about throwing your Walkman into space - it's the

study of radio waves in the light spectrum. Astronomers use radio

telescopes, which resemble enormous satellite dishes, to detect them. One

of these Astronomers is tonight's guest on DEEP SKY, Phil Solomon. Phil's

specialty is the material from which stars form: giant molecular clouds,

starbursts, and the impact of Galaxy collisions. You can ask Phil more about

any of these topics by tuning into our station at 8:00PM ET for an all-new

live episode of DEEP SKY!

SPY satellites TO BE SHIELDED AGAINST LASER ATTACKS

It may sound like science fiction, but billion dollar satellites

could be vulnerable to the blinding flash of enemy lasers. MCNC, a

North Carolina company, has developed protective "eyelids" that can

close in a fraction of a second, protecting delicate sensors.

DEFECTIVE ENGINE COMPONENTS INSTALLLED IN SHUTTLE

Engine seals that were supposed to be discarded turned up in one of

the main engines of shuttle Atlantis. The engine will be replaced in

preparation for Atlantis' mission to the international space station.

This is the second time in months that rejected parts have turned up

again.

NAMECHANGE FOR NEAR

The Near-Earth asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft has been

renamed the NEAR Shoemaker, in honor of pioneering planetary

geologist Eugene Shoemaker.

NASA Responds to Criticism of Independent Reports

Two independent reports have criticized the philosophy of "better,

cheaper, faster" that spawned two failed Mars missions. A NASA team

will determine how to respond to the reports. NASA is expected to

decide by midsummer what action to take.
