MISSION CONTROL, OVER DOUBLE FEATURE TODAY!

At 2:00PM ET, SpaceWatch is proud to welcome a living legend of

spaceflight, veteran Astronaut John Young! From Gemini to the present,

Young has seen it all and is helping lead the space program into

the 21st century.

Then at 4:00PM ET, meet Brent Furgurson, training officer at the

almost-as-famous-as-John-Young Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory, the

world's largest indoor water tank.

COULD WE BE LISTENING FOR THE WRONG SIGNAL?

For 40 years we've been listening for alien signals in the form of

radio waves. These travel at the speed of light, but what if an

advanced society wanted to communicate faster than that? We may

not be hearing anything from space because they are communicating

with superior technology. Seth Shostak discusses the possibilities.

3 DECADES OF MARS EXPLORATION

It is hard to believe that we have been sending spacecraft to examine

Mars for 3 decades already. The Mariner missions were successful

in the 1960's, and despite the recent loss of the Mars Polar Lander,

the beauty of the red planet continues to unfold as the 1997 Mars

Global Surveyor sends radio data to earth.

IO AND Europa LIKE NEVER BEFORE

New images from the Galileo spacecraft provide sharper pictures of

Jupiter's moons Io and Europa. Variations in Io's volcanic activity

are highlighted by pictures combining high resolution black and white

with low resolution color images. A 12-frame mosaic captured by

Galileo shows the side of Europa facing Jupiter in the highest

resolution ever obtained.

MARS, Jupiter AND Saturn LINE UP

Skywatchers will be pleased as the three planets draw closer together

for the best conjunction of the year. The alignment means all three

planets can be seen, but bright Jupiter is most impressive, showing

its four biggest moons to binocular users and some detail of its

clouds to viewers with even a small telescope.
