Comet Hunter Contour to Eat Cosmic Dust

MIT Students to Keep Mars Plane Plans Alive?

SOMBRERO PHOTOS AMAZE ASTRONOMERS

A telescope in the Paranal Observatory obtained incredibly clear

and detailed pictures of the spectacular Sombrero galaxy, located

50 million light years from Earth. The Galaxy has an unusually

large central bulge of stars, mysterious dust rings and at the heart

of the Galaxy is believed to be a massive black hole. The Paranal's

Sombrero images rival the quality of those taken by the Hubble Space

Telescope orbiting the earth.

COMET HUNTER CONTOUR TO EAT COSMIC DUST

The Comet Nuclear Tour (Contour) spacecraft is slated to fly by the

nuclei of two or three comets starting in 2003. Instruments on

board the mostly solar-powered robot spacecraft will analyze gasses

and dust collected from the comets while a camera snaps close-ups of

their nuclei. The different compositions of the 3 comets should give

scientists more information on the diversity of Comet structure.

MIT STUDENTS TO KEEP MARS PLANE PLANS ALIVE?

NASA has given up the plan to fly an airplane on Mars in 2003 on the

100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first flight. Students

from MIT are hoping to keep the project alive with private funding,

modifying the project to make the it less of a scientific mission

and more of a technology demonstration, celebrating the centennial.
