THE LATEST FROM SPACEWATCH

Among the most important people working in mission control are

the system flight controllers. Each one is responsible for a

specific aspect to each mission. This was Bob Carlton's job on

the Apollo missions. He also had to suffer through Armstrong's

"pranks" during simulation programs...Meet the man in the hot seat:

Bob "Control" Carlton, today at 2:00PM ET on an

all-new MISSION CONTROL, OVER.

SEARCHING FOR ALIENS IN PUERTO RICO

Seth Shostak, and other SETI astronomers, monitor 28 million

channels for signs of alien life on the Arecibo radio telescope in

Puerto Rico. "Pipeline processing" helps to eliminate the signals

which are mere terrestrial interference, such as satellite signals,

versus those that originate in deep space.

ICE AGE FOREST DISCOVERED IN NORTHERN US

5 acres of almost perfectly preserved forest dating back to the

last ice age were uncovered by accident in a sand mining operation.

The ancient trees sprouted as the last glaciers retreated, then

were buried by water and sand due to rapidly increasing global

temperatures. scientists analyze what the petrified forest might

teach us about today's changing global climate.

NASA CANCELS X-38 TEST FLIGHT DUE TO ELECTRICAL SHORT

The X-38 prototype is designed to be used as an emergency rescue

vehicle for the International Space Station. Electrical trouble,

possibly with the flight control system, happened minutes into the

final test preparations, preventing the X-38 from being released

from a B-52 at 35 000 feet, as intended.

NEW HOPE FOR GAMMA RAY OBSERVATORY

NASA may abort plans to deliberately crash the orbiting telescope

into the ocean this summer. Engineers may have found ways to keep

the observatory in orbit with back-up methods even if another of

its 3 gyroscopes fail. The ability to control the re-entry of the

GRO safely is the main factor in the debate whether to keep the

observatory in orbit.
