Galileo Flyby Successful Despite Glitches

New light Shed on Dark Matter

NEAR Descends Toward asteroid Eros

GALILEO FLYBY SUCCESSFUL DESPITE GLITCHES

Though radiation triggered several resets, including one that

placed the probe into a "standby mode" during playback of mission

details, Galileo completed all scheduled activities for its flyby

of Jupiter's Moon Io. This is Galileo's third such flyby of the

volcanic moon, and its closest yet.

NEW light SHED ON DARK MATTER

Stanford researches claim to be making progress in proving and

detecting the existence of "dark matter". The findings of the

Stanford team could contradict the findings of earlier Italian

research. The long hypothesized matter theoretically composes more

than 90% of the mass of the universe, and has been postulated based

on certain general considerations about the formation of the universe.

NEAR DESCENDS TOWARD asteroid EROS

Thursday's engine firing edges NEAR closer in its orbit around

Eros, and two more scientific instruments will be directed toward

the asteroid this week. The probe is on course to orbit at a

distance of 120 miles (200 kilometers) on March 3rd, and perhaps

a landing later this year. But the tumbling Eros in its eccentric

orbit could prove hazardous to the probe.
