THE LATEST FROM SPACEWATCH

Did you know that we have better topographic maps of Mars than of

the Earth? The crew of the Space Shuttle Endeavor is in the process

of remedying that situation right now with their radar topography

mission. Their project manager, Howard Eisen, is this week's guest

on an all-new MISSION CONTROL, OVER Talk live with Howard, Tuesday

NEAR REACHES EROS

The romantic Near Earth asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft kept

its valentine's date with asteroid Eros yesterday, when it made a

course correction that brought it into orbit around the

peanut-shaped spacerock. The first photos returned show detailed

images of the asteroid's surface, including large craters, and even

boulders held by its weak gravity.

NASA CONTINUES TO WRESTLE WITH THRUSTER PROBLEM ON ENDEAVOUR

The 11-day Space Shuttle radar mapping mission is going well, with

the equipment performing as expected, except for one component:

the thruster at the end of the radar boom designed to keep the

shuttle parallel to the ground. A glitch has forced them to use

1.5 times as much fuel. NASA is considering its options, which

include not using the thrusters, and attempting to fix the problem

by hand.

MISSING RUSSIAN spacecraft FOUND

After the successful launch and re-entry of an experimental booster

rocket, Russian officials were unable to locate its landing position

to recover it. The spacecraft, called the Fregat, went missing

because of malfunctioning radio beacons and a heavy snowstorm. A

satellite attached to the Fregat is still missing.
