AN ALL-NEW "MISSION CONTROL, OVER" on SpaceWatch

"OK gentlemen, this is how you put on your spacesuit." Chances

are, the man who gave that lesson to some of NASA’s biggest and

brightest was Alan Rochford. Before NASA, he tested flight suits

on chimpanzees - he joined the space program just in time to suit-up

the first human astronauts. Part of his job included teaching them

what the different pieces of equipment on their spacesuits did and

how they were to be used. In the process, he got

up-close-and-personal with some the most famous astronauts of all

time! And when it came time to launch, Alan was right there by the

capsule door, not leaving until the hatch was shut and locked.

ENDEAVOUR LAUNCH DATE PUSHED BACK AGAIN

Already pushed back to Feb. 9th, NASA is looking to push the launch

of the Space Shuttle Endeavour back even further - to Feb. 12th.

This is because the earlier date corresponds with another unmanned

rocket launch as well as a countdown rehearsal for an expendable

booster on a nearby launch pad.

CHINA COULD PUT A MAN IN SPACE SOON

Several information sources indicate that China may be ready to

send a man into orbit - possibly as soon as Feb. 5th, to coincide

with the beginning of the Year of the Dragon. This speculation

comes from several sources including recent editorials in pro-China

Hong Kong newspapers. The launch will be with the Chinese-built

Shenzhou capsule.

NEAR CAPTURES MORE PICTURES OF EROS AS IT APPROACHES

Now only 11,000 kilometres and 12 days away from reaching the

Asteroid Eros, the Earth asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft

captured another set of photos of its target. On Feb. 14th, the

spacecraft will go into orbit around the spacerock, begin gathering

scientific data, and possibly even attempt a landing.
