UPCOMING SHUTTLE MISSION SHORTENED

NASA has decided that the Space Shuttle Endeavour's 11-day mission

to make topographic maps of Earth is just too ambitious. They had

originally planned to spend 10 of the days mapping, and instead

plan to shorten it by one day. This will allow them time to recover

a $142 million mapping mast if they encounter any problems, and

need to spacewalk to recover it. The shuttle is due to launch

December 31st from Cape Canaveral.

LAUNCH TOWER DEMOLISHED AT VANDENBERG

An obsolete launch tower, 43 metres tall, was demolished at

Vandenberg Air Force Base on Saturday. The facility was designed

to launch Atlas and Thor rockets, and was built in 1960, and over

the course of its lifetime, it launched a total of 81 rockets.

REFURBISHED HUBBLE IS BETTER THAN EVER

The newest set of photos taken by the recently repaired Hubble

Space telescope are in, and the Astronomers say that the telescope

is better than new. The telescope was pointed at two interested

celestial phenomena: the Eskimo Nebula (a planetary nebular

resembling a face in a fur hood), and a massive cluster of Galaxies

called Abel 2218. Welcome back Hubble!

KAZAKHSTAN MAINTAINS THE BAN ON PROTONS

The Russian Space Agency claims that 12-14 Proton rockets will

launch this year, but not if Kazakhstan has anything to say about

it. The deputy head of Kazakhstan's National Space Committee has

said that they have not given permission for Protons to launch

again from Baikonur, and they won't until investigations into the

recent launch failures have been completed.
