Get Ready for a Lunar Eclipse Thursday

NASA Considers Destroying Space Observatory

The Polar Lander is Officially MIA

First Launch of the Year Aborted

GET READY FOR A LUNAR ECLIPSE THURSDAY

On Thursday night at approximately 7:00pm PST, the Earth will

begin to pass between the Moon and the sun, causing a lunar

eclipse. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is completely

safe to watch with the naked eye. The Moon will be completely

covered by 8:05pm PST, and the eclipse will be over at 10:25pm.

NASA CONSIDERS DESTROYING SPACE OBSERVATORY

The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) has been one of NASA's

most expensive and productive astronomy satellites. And now the

agency is considering destroying it. Like all satellites, its

orbit will eventually decay, bringing it back to Earth, and NASA

has the fuel on board to handle it carefully. But one of the

observatory's three gyros has failed, and if another goes, they

won't be able to steer it safely back to Earth - so they're

considering bringing it back early.

THE POLAR LANDER IS OFFICIALLY MIA

NASA has finally given up hope trying to locate the Mars Polar

Lander spacecraft which went missing during its landing on the

Red Planet. They've tried every means of communicating with the

spacecraft, and tried to locate it visually with the orbiting

Global Surveyor.

FIRST LAUNCH OF THE YEAR ABORTED

The launch of a modified Minuteman ICBM would have been the first

launch of the year, but it was aborted by last-minute problems on

Friday. The rocket carried a collection of microsatellites called

JAWSAT. Controllers at Vandenberg Air Force Base will have to wait

at least a week before they can try again.
