AN ALL-NEW "DEEP SKY"

LIVE TONIGHT AT 8:00PM ET

with Gregory Matloff

"Ok Crew! Hoist the masts! Unfurl the sails! Set course for

Alpha-Centauri!"

Could the next Age of Exploration, like the last, rely on the

power of sailing vessels? NYU Astronomer and co-author of The

tarflight Handbook Dr. Gregory Matloff thinks so. He believes

solar sails are an efficient and realistic power source for

potential interstellar travel. Now he’s taking his theories to

the next level with the tether experiment. What is it? Ask him

yourself on an all-new DEEP SKY.

GLOBULAR CLUSTERS REVEAL star SECRETS

New research into globular clusters - giant stellar groups

containing thousands or even millions of stars - have revealed

many secrets about how they form. Until now, globular clusters

have contained older stars, some 12 billion years old, but

astronomers at UCLA believe they've discovered a brand new

cluster in Galaxy NGC 5253. New enough to show exactly how the

clusters may form.

MARS COULD BE OUR ANCESTRAL HOME

Scientists have tested two strains of tough bacteria to show that

it is theoretically possible for the critters to survive a trip

through space on a rock blasted from Mars by an asteroid impact.

It's estimated that over 5 trillion rocks have been thrown off

the Red planet through asteroids, and there are tonnes of Martian

rocks here on Earth.

NASA ALLEGES FRAUD BY SUBCONTRACTORS

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a civil lawsuit against

Rockwell and Boeing for concealing fraud by a subcontractor who

worked on the Space Shuttle fleet and the International Space

Station. Supposedly, the subcontractor, Omniplan, bilked Rockwell

for millions of dollars in bogus costs, and Rockwell knowingly

passed along the costs to NASA.

BLACK HOLES COULD BE AT THE CENTRE OF EVERY GALAXY

New black holes discovered at the centre of three Galaxies have

led Astronomers to wonder if there are supermassive black holes

at the core of every galaxy. Larger than 50 million times the

mass of the sun, these black holes could be the remnants of

quasars, formed before the host Galaxy took shape.

HUBBLE IS BACK IN BUSINESS

It appears that the repairs made to the Hubble Space Telescope by

the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery were successful, and the

giant eye in the sky is ready to go back to work. NASA has been

running the telescope through a series of tests, and on Monday it

began making science observations again.
