RISK OF asteroid STRIKE REDUCED

The estimate of potentially Earth-crossing asteroids has been

reduced from 2,000 to about 700. This means that the chance the

Earth will be struck by an asteroid is down to 1% for every 2,000

years. This new study was produced by David Rabinowitz of Yale

University with colleagues at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, and was

based on research using new techniques for finding asteroids.

EXPLODING stars FORM Halo AROUND MILKY WAY

Scientists working with the new Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic

Explorer (FUSE) spacecraft have determined that exploding stars

have left a Halo of hot gas around the Milky Way. This Halo is

enormous, extending 5,000 to 10,000 light years above and below

the plane of the Milky Way.

EXPERTS RECOMMEND PRIVATIZED SPACE STATION

A report by the Space Studies Board of the National Research

Council has recommended that NASA seriously considers privatizing

the International Space Station currently under construction. The

board recommended that NASA moves quickly to find a consortium

led by a research institution managed by a strong scientific

director, who reports to NASA at the highest level.
