UK APPOINTS asteroid TASKFORCE
A taskforce has been appointed by the UK government to investigate
the possibility of asteroids striking the Earth, and strategies to
defend against this disaster. The three-man committee consists of a
past chairman of the European Space Agency's council, an
environmentalist, and a university professor. They're expected
to produce a report by the middle of 2000.
NASA REPORTS FEW Y2K PROBLEMS
NASA entered the New Year with almost no Y2K bug-related glitches.
In fact, the space agency was only able to trace a single problem
related to a piece of planning software to the bug. NASA brought
the Space Shuttle Discovery back to Earth early to avoid any
potential Y2K-related problems.
BEAL AEROSPACE CONSIDERS FLORIDA-BASED ROCKET FACTORY
Although their ideal location to set up a new rocket factory was
in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Beal Aerospace is running up against
enough opposition from environmentalists and residents to consider
a proposal from Florida. The Florida government has offered Beal a
combination of tax incentives and grants to locate the factory
in the state.
MILITARY satellite Y2K GLITCH FIXED
Like NASA, the US Air Force suffered few Y2K-related problems
with their hardware and software. One, fairly severe, but quickly
fixed problem was with the ground link that processes the
satellite's feed. The system was down for a few hours, below
capacity for the rest of the weekend, and fully operational
