MORE EVIDENCE OF PAST OCEANS ON MARS

New photos taken by the Mars Global Surveyor show features that

indicate Mars may have had liquid water in the past. A geological

feature extending around the northern third of the planet looks

like a giant bathtub ring, which could have been caused by waves

lapping against an ancient Martian shore.

ARIANE 5 LAUNCHES X-RAY TELESCOPE

An Ariane 5 rocket launched successfully into orbit carrying the

European Space Agency's XMM satellite - the largest x-ray telescope

ever built. This is a historic launch, as it's the first time an

Ariane 5 has been used for commercial purposes; it's also the

largest satellite ever launched by the ESA.

DISCOVERY'S LAUNCH PUSHED BACK ALMOST ANOTHER WEEK

After investigating the dented fuel line discovered yesterday

on the Space Shuttle Discovery, NASA engineers have decided to

replace it. The process will take a couple of days, so the launch

to repair Hubble has been pushed back to end of the week. The only

constraint is that NASA wants to ensure Discovery returns before

the end of the year - to avoid Y2K issues.

In partnership with Energia, Spacehab announced that they

are working on a permanent commercial outpost which could be

attached to the International Space Station as early as 2002.

Spacehab estimates the module - dubbed Enterprise - will cost
