French Satellite Launched by Ariane 4.
A Special 1-hour Deep Sky
with Steve Gorevan and Michael Allison
As part of Space
to Mars, Michael and Andy will be talking with robotics engineer
Steve Gorevan from Honeybee labs in New York City. Steve's research
team is building a highly precise diamond-tipped drill for the
next mission to Mars. Their sample-return technology will bring
back pill-sized cores that NASA hopes will contain signs of life!
We'll also be talking to Michael Allison, a Mars Climatologist
from the Goddard Institute for Space Science. Michael consulted
on the Mars Polar Lander project, and he'll take your questions
in chat about tomorrow's historic landing!

Polar Lander Remains Silent
Clerical Error Could Delay Shuttle Launch Again

POLAR LANDER REMAINS SILENT
Although the Mars Polar Lander arrived at the Red planet on
Friday, NASA hasn't heard a peep out of it. After trying to
communicate with the lander via its main antenna on Friday,
they switched to try communicating through a different antenna
relayed by the Global Surveyor - no luck either. NASA hasn't
heard from the twin microprobes which were crashlanded into
the surface on Friday. They'll attempt to continue to contact
the Lander, but the possibility of success decreases every day.
CLERICAL ERROR COULD DELAY SHUTTLE LAUNCH AGAIN
While repairing faulty wiring on the Space Shuttle Discovery,
work crews neglected to record whether a specific wire had
been fixed. Not willing to take any risks, they'll have to
recheck Discovery while it's on the pad - this could cause
another delay, and push the launch back from December 11th.
FRENCH satellite LAUNCHED BY ARIANE 4
The French Helios 2 reconnaissance satellite, built by Matra
Marconi, was launched on board an Ariane 4 booster rocket
from the Ariane launch site in French Guiana. The satellite
was launched on Friday, Dec. 3rd at 16:22 UT. No problems
were reported with the launch.
