RUSSIAN AND KAZAKHSTAN AGREE ON ROCKET LAUNCH DEAL
Government officials from Russia and Kazakhstan have reached an
agreement regarding launches from the Baikonur cosmodrome. The
two countries have agreed that Kazakhstan may only ban launches
from rockets which have exploded - such as the two recent Proton
crashes. This will allow an upcoming Globalstar launch on board a
Soyuz rocket to proceed as planned.
COMMERCIAL SPACE DEAL BETWEEN UKRAINE AND BRAZIL
If a new deal works out, Ukrainian rockets could soon be launching
from Brazil. Officials from the two countries recently announced
a broad cooperation agreement to launch Ukrainian Tsyklon-4 rockets
from Brazil's equatorial cosmodrome in 2001. 12 launches a year
are planned as part of this 10-year deal.
SPACE HOLIDAYS MIGHT ONLY BE 20 YEARS AWAY
The World Tourism Organization believes that you could take a
trip into space in as soon as 20 years. A variety of private
commercial ventures are planning ways to get people into space,
and even at $100,000 a ticket, people are already lining up to buy.
MORE SHUTTLE WIRING PROBLEMS FOUND
With only a few weeks to go before its launch to fix the Hubble
Space Telescope, NASA engineers have discovered more wire damage
on the Space Shuttle Discovery. All the work can be done on the
launch pad, so it's unknown whether the damage will cause any
additional delays past the Dec. 6th scheduled launch.
GALILEO PROBE HELPS REVEAL SECRETS OF JUPITER'S ORIGINS
When the Galileo spacecraft first passed the planet Jupiter,
it released a small probe designed to parachute through the
gas giant's atmosphere, and return data about its descent.
Before the probe was crushed under the immense temperature
and pressure, it provided key data that Astronomers are still
working - data that could provide clues to the formation of gas giants.
DISTANT GALACTIC CLUSTER OBSERVED BY CHANDRA
The Chandra X-ray observatory was recently focused on a distant
object known as 3C295 - a globular Galaxy cluster 5 billion
light years away. Over two million light years across, the
cluster contains a hundred galaxies. It's believed the cluster
suffered a massive explosion a million years ago.
