LAUNCH COMPLEX 41 DEMOLISHED

Hundreds watched as historic Launch Complex 41 was demolished Thursday,

using 80 kilograms of high explosive. Significantly less expensive than

dismantling the 90 meter structure, the explosive demolition will make

space on the Cape for more modern launch facilities.

Using the Precision Solar Photometric telescope at NCAR’s Mauna Loa Solar

Observatory, researchers are studying bright rings around sunspots to better

learn why they exist. The bigger the spot, the brighter the ring.

CHINESE ROCKET LAUNCHES TWO SATELLITES

Two Brazilian satellites were successfully placed in orbit by a Chinese

Long March 4B booster on Thursday, launched from the Taiyuan launch center

in central China. The satellites were the CBERS-1 (China-Brazil Earth

Resources satellite 1), and the SACI-1, designed to test experimental

technologies.
