SEA LAUNCH SENDS ITS FIRST satellite TO ORBIT
A Ukrainian-Russian Zenit-3SL rocket carrying a satellite for DirecTV
lifted off from the Sea Launch facility on Sunday. This was the first
commercial launch from the Boeing-built aquatic platform located near
the equator. Sea Launch has orders for 19 more launches through 2003.
CHANDRA REVEALS SUPERSTAR'S INNER CORE
New images released from the Chandra X-ray observatory of the star Eta
Carinae show a hot inner core star surrounded by rings of dust rapidly
moving apart. Between 1837 and 1856 Eta Carinae was the second brightest
star in the sky, it dimmed to become invisible to the naked eye. Recently,
however, the star has brightened enough to be visible again.
KUIPER BELT OBJECTS COULD BE REMNANTS FROM CHARON'S CREATION
Astronomers have long believed that Pluto's Moon Charon was formed when
a large object smashed into the planet. But recent evidence lends further
proof to the theory, as researchers from the Southwest Research Institute
have found small Kuiper belt Objects with the same mineral composition as
Pluto - possible remnants of the ancient collision.
MARS LANDER WON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH METRICS
After the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter, NASA engineers were justifiably
worried that the Mars Polar Lander could suffer the same problem, but reviews
of its current course show the Lander right on track for its 90-day mission
to search for water on Mars. Engineers are working to reprogram the landing
sequences as its was originally going to be coordinated through
the Climate Orbiter.
