MARS ORBITER LOSS CAUSED BY BAD MATH

It appears that the loss of the Mars Climate Orbiter, which disappeared

from NASA's instruments while making a dangerous flyby of the Red Planet,

was likely caused by a simple miscalculation. A contractor provided

measurements in English while the Orbiter team was assuming they

were metric.

PIZZA HUT SPONSORS ROCKET LAUNCH

Nearly broke, Russian space officials are looking for any way to offset

the costs to develop their components of the International Space Station.

Pizza Hut has agreed to pay approximately $1.25 million to have their logo

slapped on the side of a Russian Proton rocket which will carry the

living quarters for the space station.

URANUS AND Neptune MAY FORM DIAMONDS

Recent laboratory experiments carried out at Berkeley have tried to

mimic the effects caused by the enormous pressures on Uranus and Neptune.

By subjecting methane - a common element in the planets' atmospheres - to

100,000-500,000 times the pressure on Earth, some of the methane

turned into diamond.

EUROPA DISCOVERED TO CONTAIN SULPHURIC ACID

Data returned by the Galileo spacecraft has shown that Europa's surface

contains sulphuric acid. Ironically, this substance, also found in car

batteries, may actually improve the chances of finding life on the moon.

The acid could serve as an energy source for life on the frigid world.
